Plymouth GTX – Raw Power and Agility
General Motors created a new revolution in the automobile industry by launching the revolutionary model GTO. This car flaunted a much powerful engine which was placed in a mid size car which was a steeping stone in the Muscle car industry. Later on with Plymouth GTO this car maker created a new record in the muscle cars history.
Plymouth GTX pioneered one of the favorite muscle cars for classic car aficionados of all times. Plymouth GTX was offered with 2 engine choices. Out of both 440 cu in, big block engine which engineered 375 hp. The other engine option was the Hemi 426 cu in engine that engineered 4525 hp. This car was capable of chasing 0 to 60 in approximately 6 second. According to a data released by Motor Trend Magazine Plymouth GTX was one of the best cars that had superior handling as compared to other cars of that era. This car had reached the peak of sales with more than 13,000 examples of this model produced and sold in the year 1967.
Later in the year 1968, this car was offered with minor engine upgrades and facelifts. GTX was restyled along with its many cars offered. This fresh new designed was shared to other Plymouth Intermediaries Super Bee, Dodge Charge and Road Runner which was one of the best models from Plymouth. This car still rules the classic car market and is known as the car which represented classic cars of that time. Road Runner is the picture that every classic car aficionado visualizes in his mind when he thinks of Classic car. Both the cars Road Runner and Plymouth GTX shared the same engine with Super Bee, Dodge Charger and Road runner. This car had a sturdy exterior which was mated with perfect lush interior and exquisite body designs. The performance which these cars delivered was extra ordinary as compared to its previous engines. Plymouth GTX was even recognized as one of the fastest powerful standard car built for the American consumers by Car Life Magazine. The 44O cu in engine was not even way to behind in terms of sales as this cars sales had reached 18,000 examples.
69 and 70 model did not flaunt much difference in the model. This car then became the heart of many car enthusiasts during those times. This car then flaunted 440 cu in, tri 2 barrel carburetors which were mounted on the top most part of the engine. This engine gave a boost of 35 hp. The car was known for its fuel efficient engine. Plymouth GTX was continued later as optional package for the heritage Road Runner. This car with no doubt was the shooting star of Plymouth that is it came with outstanding performance and then faded away.
Plymouth continued the GTX name for a few more years as an option package on the Road Runner. It was never the same. The GTX had come to the performance car market late and like a shooting star it burned very bright for a while and then faded away. Today collectors and enthusiasts actively seek out this series because of their good looks, impressive power and relatively scarcity.
